REPORT: County put an in-form York to the sword in front of bumper EP crowd

Stockport County put a terrible week of football behind them to defeat high-flying York City 2-0, in front of almost 4,500 people at Edgeley Park.

Two first half goals from Darren Stephenson and Matty Warburton were enough to see off the Yorkshire side, who before today’s match had not lost in seven games.

County manager Jim Gannon brought Ben Hinchliffe back into the starting line-up, whilst Matty Warburton also returned following his injury, taking the injured Gary Stopforth’s place in the first XI.

The change paid dividends too, with the former Curzon man causing York all sorts of problems with his attacking intent in the opening stages of the game.

It was Darren Stephenson that opened the scoring for County, however, after being fed by Warburton on the right side of the penalty area before smashing the ball past Adam Bartlett at the Railway End.

And despite the away side rallying following the goal, it was two shortly afterwards. Matty Warburton picked up the ball from 25 yards and smashed a shot under the outstretched Bartlett to make it 2-0.

City tried to get themselves back in the game, with leading scorer Jon Parkin going close on a number of occasions, but a lack of clinical finishing meant that the Hatters went in to half-time with a two goal lead.

First half man-of-the-match Warburton was substituted early on in the second half, as he continued his return to fitness, as County looked to soak up pressure and hit York on the break.

Hinchliffe had to be alert to tip over a shot from Simon Heslop, whilst Jamie Stott cleared a strike from Amari Morgan-Smith off of the goal line.

Hincliffe then blocked another effort from Morgan Smith, as the away side became increasingly frustrated with the defensive resolve of the County back line.

Stott made his third goal-line clearance of the game, this time acrobatically keeping out a looped Parkin effort in the closing stages of the game.

And it finished 2-0, with the Hatters picking up a first league victory in four attempts to see themselves move three points within the play-offs.
