Stockport County travel to Merseyside this weekend to face Southport, with the Sandgrounders aiming for their first victory over the Hatters this season.
A big win for County could see them sneak into the play-offs on goal difference, with manager Jim Gannon hoping that the ever-building momentum behind his team continues this Saturday and into the business end of the season.
Formed in 1881, Southport are one of the division’s oldest clubs. The Sandgrounders were members of the football league until 1978, where coincidentally they were the last club to get relegated through the controversial re-election method. Since the seventies, the club have remained a semi-professional non-league club (apart from a two year spell as a pro team in 2006.
This season, the club started well but a 6-0 defeat at Edgeley Park in September was the beginning of a downward spiral and the Merseyside club now sit only three points clear of relegation. In the previous few months, and with Kevin Davies at the helm, the club have spent big in order to avoid the dreaded double relegation and have recently added Elliott Osbourne, Jason Gilchrist and Dion Charles to their ranks.
Matty Warburton and Sam Minihan are both still out of action with their respective injuries, whilst Dan Cowan could also miss out after limping off against Kidderminster. Jamie Stott could make his debut after signing on loan from Oldham but faces competition from the returning Chris Smalley, Stephen O’Halloran and Michael Clarke.
