REPORT: Cup run continues as Lancaster brushed aside

County progressed in the Buildbase FA Trophy this afternoon, as they overcame Lancaster City with a 3-1 victory.

Goals from Jason Oswell, Gary Stopforth and Bohan Dixon were enough to beat the Evo-stik premier side at a chilly Giant Axe Stadium.

Manager Jim Gannon named the same side that beat Spennymoor at Edgeley Park, with Oswell starting up top supported by Kallum Mantack, Gary Stopforth and Darren Stephenson.

County started brightly and Oswell, has he sorted his footwork out, could have put the Hatters ahead, but the Ball was smothered by City goalkeeper Josh Powell.

It wasn’t long though before County were ahead. A James Ball cross was nodded across goal by Oswell, past the reach of the ‘keeper to put the away team 1-0 up.

And it was 2-0 shortly before half-time. A back-pass bobbled over the goalkeepers foot which allowed Stopforth the opportunity to slot home from the left side of the penalty area into an open goal.

The Hatters came out firing in the second half and could have gone further ahead, Oswell had a chance saves by Powell and Stephenson’s cross was hacked clear when Stopforth was waiting to shoot.

But that pressure counted for nought when Lancaster were awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute.

Michael Clarke was adjudged to have fouled Steel, to the surprise of many Hatters fans and players, with substitute Ryan Winder sending Hinchliffe the wrong way from the spot.

City hugged and puffed and some wayward passing from County could have been costly, with Hinchliffe saving smartly on two occasions.

The Hatters got a deserved third goal in the 90th minute, substitute Bohan Dixon’s deflected strike from the edge of the box found the bottom corner, to put the game beyond the eco-stik side’s reach.
