OPINION: Poor run of form for Gannon shouldn’t signal the end

By Chris Crook

It appears that lots of Stockport County supporters have turned on manager Jim Gannon over the past couple of weeks, following a string of disappointing results in the league. But does this mean that Gannon, who is in his third spell as Hatters boss, should go?

All managers have bad spells and good spells, and admittedly Jim’s side appears to be going through the aforementioned ‘bad spell’, but should the County board go ahead and sack Gannon? In my opinion, no.

Take FC Halifax Town’s manager – Billy Heath, as an example. Back to back promotions with North Ferriby and then the Shaymen last season have put the Yorkshire side back in the National League Premier. But Billy’s struggles this year as he tries to keep his side in the division threatens to override his success, but this doesn’t make him a bad manager and it certainly doesn’t necessarily mean he should be sacked.

I believe this is similar to the Jim Gannon and Stockport County situation. Last season we were literally one goal from making the play-offs, nobody seemed to be calling for his head then!

So, before you write ‘Gannon Out’ on your respective social media sites, let’s think positive. Of course we’re all entitled to our opinions but I think we should be getting behind the manager regardless. Jim Gannon is the manager of Stockport County, and is the best man for the job.

  1. Agreed wholeheartedly! We’re falling well short of expectations, but it seems that fans have short memories. Remember Hamann? Remember Kalezić? Remember Bogie? Remember Young? I do. Failed experiments and managers proven at this level. They all failed. Miserably! Gannon is our guy. I’ll hear no arguments against. He deserves time. Those saying that he needs to go are entitled to believe what they like, but they’re wrong as far as I’m concerned and need to give over flapping their guns so vociferously.

  2. All these Gannon out fans if he did go who would come in that is any better ??? and we would have to pay gannon up his contract so the in coming manager wouldnt have any money to improve the team .

  3. What does lots mean? The Silent majority want him to stay and complete the job. He’s the most qualified proven coach we have had for a long time and any player who doesn’t want to play to Jims instructions needs to do one.

FT players dont have any distractions or excuses.

PT players have done a full days work / work week at their other job and by the time Satuday comes most are knackered.
