PREVIEW: Southport visit Edgeley Park in FA Trophy qualifier

Stockport County host Southport FC for the second time this season, as the Sandgrounders return to Edgeley Park for the FA Trophy this weekend.

Formed in 1881, Southport are one of the division’s oldest clubs. The Sandgrounders were members of the football league until 1978, where coincidentally they were the last club to get relegated through the controversial re-election method. Since the seventies, the club have remained a semi-professional non-league club (apart from a two year spell as a pro team in 2006.

This season, the club started well but a 6-0 defeat at Edgeley Park in September was the beginning of a downward spiral and the Merseyside club now sit two spots outside of relegation, with 21 points.

Team News:

With £5,000 up for grabs, Gannon will likely name a strong side as he aims to find consistency in his team this year. Darren Stephenson could start after featuring three times from the bench since his return from an ankle injury.

Michael Clarke and Stephen O’Halloran will likely feature at the back, although Chris Smalley will be hoping for a chance to impress after losing his place to current captain Clarke.

Admission for the match comes in at a reduced £10/£7/£3. Tickets are available on the gate but with a large gate expected, the club are advising supporters to purchase in advance to avoid queues.

If you aren’t lucky enough to attend the match, Imagine FM will have commentary of the game on 104.9.
