County went down 3-2 to a Telford side, who before last night were without a home win in five attempts this season, as motorway closure forced Gannon to alter his line-up.
It was a topsy-turvy game that ended in a Bucks win as the M6 closure resulted in Stopforth, Smalley and Duxbury all arriving late for the match, with Adam Thomas, Bohan Dixon and Connor Hampson replacing the trio.
Despite the setback, County started brightly enough in the pouring Shropshire rain, but found themselves behind after 11 minutes following an alleged Matty Warburton handball inside the box. John Marsden, formerly of County, duly slotted the ball past Hinchliffe to put his new side 1-0 up.
Warburton atoned for the penalty just 10 minutes later, as he struck home an Adam Thomas cross on 23 minutes to draw the Hatters level. But County’s joy was short-lived, as Telford went ahead once more.
Marcus Dinanga drilled home a Telford corner from inside the area as the frailties of County’s makeshift defence came to light once again.
There was still time for more drama before the half-time whistle, as debutant Bohan Dixon scored with a sweetly-struck shot from outside the area to again pull Stockport level.
HT: Telford 2-2 County
Gannon brought Smalley and Duxbury on at half-time in a bid to shore up the defence that had already conceded 13 goals away from home this season.
The substitutions changed the County shape and as a result, the away side threatened the Telford goal much less during the second half. Although Matty Warburton and Dan Cowan both had half chances to score.
But as Telford applied ever-greater pressure, it seemed only a matter of time before a goal came and on the 71st minute, substitute Jordan Murphy put United ahead with a drilled shot low past Hinchliffe.
Tom Walker joined the County attack late on but it never looked as though the Hatters would score, and following three minutes of added time, County fell to their fifth away defeat of the campaign.
