County overcame a strong Brackley side with a comprehensive 3-0 victory, goals from Meppen-Walters and Kaine Felix saw off our fellow promotion rivals at St James’ Park.
It was a much changed County side that took to the pitch on a rainy Tuesday night in Northamptonshire, with Amis and Meppen-Walters and Ross coming into the fold as County adopted a four at the back tactic. The team-sheet raised a few eyebrows amongst fans but many were happy to be proven wrong in what was a blistering performance by The Hatters.
County started strong, with Amis heading just wide and Lloyd having a goal disallowed for a push. But the cheshire side didn’t have to wait long for their first goal. 24 minutes into the match, Fleetwood loanee Osborne swung the ball in from the corner and Meppen-Walters nodded in at the unguarded far post to secure his third goal of the season.
Ten minutes later, and County were in dreamland. Good work from Amis saw Osborne feed the ball the Meppen-Walters on the edge of the box, the reinstated midfielder curled the ball into the far corner of the net. Brackley ‘keeper Walker will have hoped to have dealt with the relatively tame shot, as he saw his side go 2-0 behind.
HT: Brackley 0-2 County
In a relatively balanced second half, Lloyd and Amis had chances to add to the scoreline, whilst Brackley forward Adam Walker smashed a free-kick against the post. The next goal was certainly going to be an important one and fortunately it went County’s way. Minihan dinked a cross in and the ball fell kindly for Kaine Felix, the York loanee scoring his second County goal in 12 appearances.
Amis could have added a fourth after being put through on goal late in the game, but a good save from Laurie Walker denied our number 9 a deserved goal. County will not mind, however, as they climbed to 5th place and into the play-offs for the first time in 2017.
