County beat a stubborn Marine side in the FA trophy at the weekend to overcome the Evostik club and secure a space in the second round of the competition, securing another home match against Fylde or Brackley.
Marine came out of the traps quickly and went ahead in the 7th minute after Stopforth tripped his man following a lose ball in the box. Danny Mitchley stepped up and smashed the penalty past Hinchliffe and preceded to bizarrely goad the Cheadle End with the support of his teammates.
County fought back and came close with a Marsden shot on the turn was put round the post by Calvin Hare, they continued to gradually dominate play in the hunt for an equaliser and on the 42nd minute, a brilliant Lloyd delivery into the box was headed home by the fantastic Kayode Odejayi. 1-1.
Right on half time, County were given a sucker-punch as a ball through the defence saw Mitchley set in on goal. The Marine captain slotting past Hinchliffe despite a strong call for offside from the Cheadle End and Main Stand supporters. The lack of flag led to the referee consulting his linesman, but after a brief discussion the goal was allowed to stand.
HT: County 1-2 Marine
County came out in much the same vain as the first half, dictating play but failing to create many opportunities. The turning point came on Marine Midfielder Briezell made a rash challenge on Gary Stopforth, prompting a straight red card from the referee and ensuring Marine’s last thirty minutes were to be played with ten men.
Lloyd, Marsden, Minihan and Amis (who had been brought on alongside Jimmy Ball to add firepower to County) all had good chances to equalise but it wasn’t until a handball in the 85th minute, which provided County with a dangerous free-kick on the edge of the area. Danny Lloyd stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom right of the goal, passed the slow to react Hare (the goalkeeper had already been booked for slow goal kicks prior to the equaliser, so perhaps failing to get down to Lloyd’s free-kick was to be expected.
Amid the celebrations, Gannon waved his players back to go on and get the equaliser and they didn’t disappoint. 1 minute after the restart, a winding run from Lloyd along the left hand side ended in the winger being tripped. Unlike three weeks previously, where Lloyd smashed the ball against the crossbar, he slotted home to seal the win for County and leave the Marine players wondering where they’d gone wrong.
