County bow out of the FA Cup

County put up a spirited fight against conference national side Woking. In a game which was largely dominated by the Hatters, it was clinical finishing which separated the two sides in the entertaining match up at Edgeley Park.

The highly anticipated first round tie lived up to its hype as County came out of the traps quickly, they dominated he first 10 minutes and were rewarded for their efforts with a sweetly struck Jimmy Ball strike which hit the top corner, sending all 11 County players and 4000 county supporters into raptures.

2 well worked goals from Woking followed soon after, Gozie Ugwu scoring with a powerful header before a well-worked goal from Joey Jones caught County on the break.

The Hatters game plan remained the same, chance after chance came their way and their tenacity was rewarded when a slip from Woking allowed Danny Lloyd to cross the ball to an unmarked Jimmy Ball, who duly put the ball home from 3 yards out. County were level at half time and deservedly so.

HT: County 2-2 Woking

If Woking were hoping that County would ease off a little after the break, they were mistaken. County started strongly again and had the majority of the play before Woking showed their quality once more, Ugwu put the ball past Hinchliffe and, to the agony of the County fans behind the goal, saw the shot go in off the post. 3 shots on target, 3 goals.

Gannon made three changes, all attacking, as County went in search of an equaliser again. More chances fell as County ended the match with 17 shots, much more than the visitors. Unfortunately it’s goals that count and The Cards made sure County knew that as they scored their 4th of the game in injury time.

4-2 the game finished, a score line which flattered the 5th tier side severely but County’s lack of quality in front of goal showed again.

County will now focus on the league in what will be an important couple of months with regards to their play off chances. Onwards and upwards, UTH!
