Horror show at Edgeley Park as Fylde run riot to end County’s play-off hopes in style. County were outclassed from the first minute till the last as Fylde looked utterly dominant against a County side that looked lethargic and bereft of any ideas throughout the game.
County started slowly, allowing Fylde time and space around the County penalty area, and it only took till the 7th minute for Fylde’s dominance to pay-off. A flick on at the near post from a corner was bundled in and County were 1-0 down.
County improved slightly towards the end of the half, at least registering some shots towards the railway end goal. However if anyone looked more likely of extending the lead it was AFC and when the half-time whistle came, it was needed.
One can only imagine the dressing down that the players got at half time for their performance in the first half, but County emerged for the second half unchanged as Gannon decided against changing the squad up.
Any hopes that County were going to come out fighting were quashed in the 51st minute as Fylde scored their second of the game. A curling shot from the right hand side of the penalty area found the top left of the goal and County now had a mountain to climb.
It went from bad to worse, however, and a poor Connolly back-pass found Danny Rowe who couldn’t beat Henderson, however when Charles struck with the follow-up, our on-loan keeper couldn’t keep the ball out and Fylde were 3-0 up and it was game over.
Ryan Ellison was lucky to avoid a red card as he was involved in a scuffle with Barnes, both players received a yellow card when it could so easily have been worse.
Former Hatter, Danny Rowe, completed County’s misery as he strolled through the County defence before firing effortlessly past Henderson. Cue the exit of some 3,400 spectators. Not before, however, our match sponsors begrudgingly gave out the man of the match award to Gareth Roberts, to a good few jeers.
Thankfully, the referee put County out of their misery after 3 minutes of injury time, with County losing 4-0 and the play-offs now seeming like a distant dream again.
